Hybrid : Merrell Men's Tough Glove Barefoot Running Shoes - Brown/ Honey 11
After suffering from the effects of years and years of distance running on an aging body, I started searching for a clarification to allege my fitness without all the pain. Came over the excellent book Born to Run: A hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the most Race the World Has Never Seen
It provides an in depth look at both the biology and anthropological history of running. One of the big "Eureka!" ideas is that our feet are already designed for walking and running and don't need a lot of injected foam to help them.
After making the transition to some minimalist running shoes (New equilibrium Men's Mt101 Trail Running Shoe , I started looking for something similar for day hikes and casual office wear.
Enter the Merrell Tough Glove. A blurb in a modern issue of Backpacker (1-year auto-renewal) drew my attentiveness to these.
They are all things you can dream and more. They look classy adequate to avoid the weird looks you might get from wearing the Vibram Five Fingers, and they dress up much great than any of the other "glove" or "barefoot" shoes on the market. Now, I wouldn't wear these with a suit, but I suppose you could get away with khakis and a casual sport coat with these. They put your feet in touch with the ground while providing fullness of safety with a sturdy Vibram sole. The toe box is spacious to allow your toes to spread and grab naturally, but the lacing ideas is adequate to tighten the upper for a convention fit.
The leather is super soft, and supple, with sturdy stitching. Thus far, the laces have stayed tied as they should. The fit is as true to [my] size as any shoe I've ever owned. For me these are a half size up from my Bates/Belleville size, a half size down from Danner, and the same (slightly wider & longer toe box) as what you might own in North Face, New equilibrium or Puma.
These are engineered for trail running and day hikes, and I'm sure they'll fit the bill. That's partly why I bought them, of course. But for the minimalist runner who doesn't want to keep exciting between their Vffs and a klunky structured oxford, these will work as comfortably for the urban trek and navigating corporate obstacles.
